In new interview for The Colorado Trust, a Health Equity Foundation, FORETHOUGHT.net says reliable rural broadband is “as important as electricity. http://www.coloradotrust.org/content/story/important-electricity The mission of FORETHOUGHT.net is to bridge the “digital divide” and ensure that all Coloradans have access to high quality, fast, and reliable broadband. It’s not just for watching videos. For some people, it’s a matter of whether they have access to life-saving medical advice. We are advancing projects in many rural Colorado communities. This year, we started by bringing Silverton out of the “digital desert” with fiber-backed coax broadband. Next up are the towns of Leadville and Redcliff Colorado, which are going to get 25Mbps and up wireless LTE broadband. We are upgrading 400 homes in Gypsum, Colorado, to gigabit fiber to the home. We are building gigabit fiber to the home broadband in Avon, Colorado. The list of projects under way is long, and growing. With… read more →

FORETHOUGHT.net is proud to announce that we have installed a direct dark fiber connection into the Netflix cache located in South Denver, and have turned up a direct network interconnection with Netflix. This connection provides FORETHOUGHT.net customers the shortest path from Netflix to the end user – ensuring the best quality video experience. This investment by FORETHOUGHT.net avoids congested Internet exchange points, reduces delay in transmissions, and reduces the chance for packet loss which causes annoying “rebuffering” interruptions in your Internet video experience. FORETHOUGHT.net is committed to the highest quality Internet connectivity for its customers in Colorado and New Mexico. We achieve this goal by directly interconnecting our customers to content networks, bypassing the public Internet. FORETHOUGHT.net also peers directly with Google, Apple, Microsoft, Yahoo – all on dedicated, high speed fiber optic infrastructure.
Apparently CenturyLink is going to try out implementing bandwidth caps and usage charges for its Internet services. What do you all think of that? https://www.techdirt.com/articles/20160211/09480933576/centurylink-follows-comcasts-lead-to-start-charging-broadband-overage-fees.shtml

One of the key challenges to Gigabit service is latency. What is latency, and how does it affect Internet speeds? Latency is the amount of time it takes for data to travel from its source to its destination across the Internet. Latency depends on several factors; 1) Transmission Latency: the speed of the underlying circuit. A gigabit circuit (1000 mbps) has lower transmission latency than a T1 circuit (1.5 mbps). 2) Distance Latency: The geographic distance. The speed of light becomes significant when the distance is over 100 miles. 3) Switching Latency: time it takes for data to be switched through a router. Each router or switch takes a certain amount of time to transfer data in from one port, through the device, and out another port. For Internet applications, the major components to latency are usually the Transmission Latency and the Distance Latency. The time it takes light to… read more →
